Learn the Basics About Following an Alkaline Diet

In today’s world of processed food and microwave dinners it is becoming increasingly more difficult to choose and stick to a well-balanced diet. In the distant past most people consumed what they could hunt and gather. This included a great many berries and other fruits, nuts, legumes, and leafy greens. As a result modern man’s ancestors followed a high alkaline diet.

Today most people do not even grow their own food, and many do not even know how to cook. This has led to a dependence on processed foods that is unprecedented in human history. What many of these foods have in common is that they are much more acidic than the natural foods collected when mankind still depended largely on nature’s abundance to be fed. The human digestive system simply isn’t designed to process things like large amounts of meat, poultry, grains, and refined sugars. A diet that is based primarily on these substances can cause serious health problems and hormonal imbalances.

It can be confusing trying to figure out which foods are high in alkaline content and which are more acidic, but there are plenty of resources available to help those who are interested in following a more natural and healthful dietary path. Opting to control consumption levels of acid foods doesn’t mean that there is no room for the occasional treat. Most dietitians recommend that between 60% and 80% of a person’s diet consist of alkaline foods. This leaves a lot of room for incorporating those old stand-by’s while still focusing primarily on food that is better for human health.

The food pyramid currently followed by most Americans does not reflect the basic realities of the human digestive system and dietary needs. The majority of food consumed in any day should be vegetables, not grains. This should be followed by fruits. A diet that followed recommendations regarding alkaline foods would have grains right in the middle of its pyramid, with lean proteins like fish, chicken, nuts, and oils above it. While the ordinary food pyramid does list sugary sweets at the top as the food that should be consumed least, the alkaline food pyramid would add fried foods, most meat, and any processed junk food to this category of special treats.
